The day started at the campground on North Mavora Lake. I had found the previous evening and the morning quite noisey with lots a motorcycle, boat, car, and truck traffic around the camping area so I decided to travel a bit further away from civilization. There was a 4×4 track heading North so I packed up and headed in that direction.
Sections of the track that followed the beach were too soft for my 35 mm tires with a loaded weight but once the trail left the lake edge I was able to make good progress. The trail was quite rough and rocky in spots with numerous water filled holes that I had to bike through or around. I found this quite fun and was amazed what I could bike through.
My first stop was at Carsey's hut. The hut was quite well fitted with a fireplace, wet back stove, and running water.
Was considering going on to the Forks Hut but compromised on the Boundary Hut as it looked like rain and the Boundary Hut was closer and more accessable. I reached the hut in time for a hot lunch and timed it right as my stop coincided with a shower. Once the rain let up I checked out the swing bridge and then headed back to Carsey's Hut. I found it occupied by a traveler by the name David from Christchurch. I moved in for the night and found my hut mate quite accommodating a great guy to visit with. David had advice for future segments of my ride including the Nevis road and we had some goods discussions on sustainability. He was traveling by 4×4 but because of risks getting through the next crossing he had planned to carry on with his mountain bike the next day.
